Determining Where Volume Information is Stored
The images, text, and electronic files associated with each volume can be stored in a single or two separate locations, on separate drives, on removable media (CDs, DVDs, RAID systems, etc.), or even on different computers. How you set up volume storage is completely up to you.
Changing a volume's fixed path will prompt the Server to automatically move the files to the specified new destination. The volume will be brought offline for the duration of the move, and its contents will be copied to the new location. When the copy process has completed successfully, the files will be removed at the old location, and the volume will be brought back online. If any problems or errors occur during this process -- for instance, if the Laserfiche Server does not have sufficient rights to move the files to the new location -- the process will be rolled back, and source and destination files will be unchanged.
Note: Changing the fixed path of a read-only volume or an entire logical volume will not prompt the Server to automatically move the associated files to the new location, although in the case of a logical volume, new future child volumes will be automatically created in the new location. However, if you modify the path of a child volume of a logical volume, the Server will automatically relocate its files for you.
Additionally, if you previously indicated that information of a specific type (images, text or electronic files) should be stored in the removable path, and then later indicate that it will be stored in the fixed path, the Server will automatically move only those files to the specified fixed path location. In this case, the files in the original location will not be removed until you remove them manually.
Updating the removable path will not move the images, text, or electronic files from the original path; they will need to be moved manually. We recommend that you do not move the physical files associated with a volume, but that you copy the folder structure for the entire volume (including the sub-folders and the Volume.id file) to the new location instead. Additionally, specifying that files should be stored in the removable path will not automatically move them. When manually moving files in a removable volume to a new location, be sure to test the volume in the new location before deleting it from the old location.
To configure where volume information is stored
- From the Volume
Properties dialog box, click the Path
tab.
- Determine if you want to store information in one or two locations.
- Click OK to save your changes to the volume.
To configure where volume information is stored
- Click on the volume name to open the Volume
properties page.
- In the General tab under Path, determine if you want to store information in one or two locations.
- Click Save to save your changes to the volume.
- To store information in a single location, specify either a fixed or a removable path, depending on the availability of the media your information will be stored to.
- To store information in two locations, specify a fixed and a removable path. For each type of file (i.e., images, text, and electronic files), determine the path in which it will be stored by selecting the appropriate option (fixed or removable) in the row corresponding to the desired file type.

Reminder: When specifying volume paths, keep in mind that you will need to either use a UNC path, a full path from the computer hosting the Laserfiche Server to the desired location (e.g., C:\Volumes\Volume), or a relative path. Relative paths are relative to the Laserfiche repository location and may be specified by the following notation: .\FolderName.
