Limiting Volume Size

A volume can be limited to an administrator-defined size. How the volume will behave when it reaches the size limit depends on whether it was configured to roll data over to another physical volume. For more information on volume rollover, see Volume Rollover. If rollover has not been enabled on a volume, users will be prevented from creating or migrating documents to the affected volume, though they will still be allowed to add information to documents or electronic documents associated with the affected volume, which may affect volume size.

Note: A user can continue to assign documents or electronic documents to a volume as long as it has not reached the volume limit. This means that if a very large file is imported when the volume is close to the limit, the volume may exceed the limit by a fair amount.

To determine whether a size limit will be placed on a volume

  1. From the Volume Properties dialog box, click the Maximum Size/Age tab.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • To limit the current volume by size, select the Limit this volume to a given size option and specify the total file size (in MB) to which the volume can grow.
    • Logical volumes only: To limit the current volume by rolling over whenever a particular size limit is reached, select Rollover based on a time schedule and then select your time schedule and starting date.
    • Physical sub-volumes of logical volumes only: To roll over on a particular date, even if the volume has not met is other rollover criteria, select Rollover to the next physical volume on this date and specify the date to roll over.
    • To place no size limit on the current volume, clear the Limit this volume to a given size option.
  3. Click OK to save your changes to the volume.
