Configuring Document Viewer Panes in the Laserfiche Web Client
The Laserfiche web client document viewer displays information about your documents in several panes, which can be
Available Panes
The following panes can be displayed:
- The central pane displays the document's image pages, if it has pages. You can work with pages in the image pane by zooming in and out, rotating the pages, or applying annotations. You can also customize the way these pages are displayed (for instance, viewing multiple pages at once); see Page and Thumbnail Display, below, for more information. This pane is always visible.
- If the document has no pages but does have a PDF or Microsoft Office document associated with it, the PDF Viewer or Office Viewer will be displayed in the central pane instead. You can also choose to view the PDF or Office document instead of the pages even if the document also has pages; see Viewing a PDF or Microsoft Office Document, below, for more information.
- The thumbnail pane displays the document's pages as thumbnails, allowing you to quickly locate pages and work with them (for instance, rotating or rearranging pages). You can also customize the way these thumbnails are displayed; see Page and Thumbnail Display, below, for more information. This pane is displayed by default, but can be hidden in Display Options.
- The details pane displays information about the document, such as its metadata, annotations, and any processes, record information, or discussions about it. You can also work with this information within the details pane. This pane is displayed by default, but can be hidden in Display Options. You can also choose which elements to display in the details pane (for instance, if you do not use business processes, you could hide the processes element). This pane can also be resized.
- The text pane displays the text portion of a document, whether extracted from an electronic document or OCRed from pages. You can also edit text in this pane (for example, to correct typos or OCR errors). This pane is hidden by default, but can be displayed in Display Options. This pane can also be resized.
Full Screen View
You can temporarily hide all the information in the document viewer except the central pane by clicking the Full Screen View button. This will hide all the panes except the central pane, which will then display the pages, PDF, or Office document using the entire screen. To leave full screen view, click the button again, or press ESC.
Page and Thumbnail Display
When displaying a document's pages, you can configure how they are displayed in the central pane and in the thumbnail pane. To do so, select Display Options and point to Page Display or Thumbnail Display. You can then choose to display pages and/or thumbnails in between one and four columns. For example, to display two pages side by side in the central pane, you would point to Page Display and choose 2 columns.
Viewing a PDF or Microsoft Office Document
PDFs and Microsoft Office documents can be displayed in the document viewer in read-only mode. By default, PDFs and Office documents will open in the PDF Viewer or Office Viewer if the document contains one of those file types but does not contain image pages. If the document contains image pages, they will be displayed instead, but you can choose to view the PDF or Office document by opening Display Options and selecting View PDF or View Office Document. When viewing a PDF or Office document in the document viewer, the details pane will also be available, but the thumbnail and text panes will not. Since this view is read-only, if you choose to open the document for editing, it will always open in its native application instead. You can also always choose to open the document in its native application by selecting the document in the folder browser, opening the More Actions menu, and selecting View Electronic File.
The Office Viewer supports Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations.
While most central pane functionality (such as annotations) are not available in the PDF Viewer and Office Viewer, certain commands are available within the viewers. For example, you can search within the document using the Find button in PDFs, Word documents, and Excel spreadsheets; print any document type using the Print command; and display a PDF's thumbnails. These commands are located within the PDF Viewer or Office Viewer pane.
The Office viewer requires that your site implement the Office Web Apps Server, and provide configuration information about it on the Laserfiche web client Configuration page. See General Services in the Laserfiche web client section of the Laserfiche Administration Guide for more information. The PDF viewer requires no additional configuration.
