Spool Printing vs. Direct Printing in Snapshot

Depending on your specific printing needs, consider the different printer spooling options available. To print from within a Windows application and continue working in that application as soon as possible, select spool printing. To print your documents as quickly as possible without returning to your application, select direct printing.

Spool Printing

Spool printing is a process that sends your documents to hard disk before sending them to the printing device. This process allows you to continue working in your application immediately after the document is stored, as the spooler handles the printing in the background. There are two options available when you are spool printing:

Start printing after the last page is spooled

The printing device will begin printing after the last page of the document is spooled. If printing speed is not as important to you as continuing to working within your application, select this option.

Start printing immediately

The printing device will begin printing after the first page of the document is spooled (set as default). Use this option for the best balance of printing speed and printing application availability.

Configuring Printer Spooling Options

You can configure how the Laserfiche Snapshot printer handles spooling from the Advanced tab of the Laserfiche Snapshot Properties dialog box.

Note: Spool printing creates .shl, .shd, and .tmp files in the following location: Windows\System32\Spool directory. These files are normally deleted automatically after the print job has finished, but if they remain on your computer, they can safely be deleted. You may need to stop the print spooler service in order to delete them, however, as they can be locked by the spooler while it is active.

To access your printer spooling options

  1. From the Control Panel, select Devices and Printers. Select Laserfiche Snapshot and right-click on Laserfiche Snapshot and select Printer Properties.
  2. In the Laserfiche Snapshot Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  3. Set the desired spooling options.
