Conflicting Starting Rules

If a workflow is not running as intended, ensure you do not have conflicting starting rules on your Workflow Server. Conflicting starting rules are two or more rules that will start their respective workflows based on the same starting event. Because the workflows are trying to run at the same time, on the same entry, they will be fighting for access to the entry and may not run successfully.

For example, the following starting rules have been published to the same Workflow Server and are associated with the same Laserfiche repository.

  • Starting rule assigned to Workflow A: Run Workflow A when a document is created and the document's page count is less than 100.
  • Starting rule assigned to Workflow B: Run Workflow B when a document is created and the document's page count is greater than 50.

In this scenario, the two starting rules are conflicting. If a document is created that has 51 to 99 pages, both Workflow A and Workflow B will run, which may cause unintended consequences.
