Before You Get Started with the Migration

Before you start the migration process, ensure that the following are true:

Note: The source DBMS and the destination DBMS do not need to be the same type. If you plan on upgrading from Microsoft SQL Server Express/MSDE to full Microsoft SQL Server, you can use the migration utility to handle the conversion process.

Make sure that your source Laserfiche Server is disabled. The migration process retrieves data as it needs it from the source database. This means that if you modify data during the migration process, the migrated database may end up with inconsistent data.

Prior to migrating your Laserfiche repository, you may wish to first create an empty destination Microsoft SQL Server database. By manually creating your Microsoft SQL Server database, you can optimize your database to best suit the needs of your installation, as there are options that can only be set when a database is created. For more information on creating a database for your DBMS, see Creating a Repository, as well as the documentation included with your DBMS. If you do not create an empty Microsoft SQL Server source database prior to a migration, the migration wizard is capable of automatically creating a new database during the migration process.

The Laserfiche Migration Wizard allows you to run a premigration data integrity check for possible issues without having to go through the actual migration process. This allows you to manually perform any needed modifications to the source database before migrating it. This step is completely optional and should only be performed by advanced users. The Laserfiche Migration Wizard contains default settings for handling most data conflicts.

Reminder: The premigration data integrity check option is purely optional. The check does not modify any data and does not directly affect the actual migration process. The premigration data integrity check is a diagnostic tool for providing additional information to advanced users.

While the SQL data transfer itself does not need access to your Laserfiche Server 11, there are two optional steps in the migration utility, following a successful data transfer, that do require access to your Laserfiche Server 11: registering a new repository and using the Quick Reindex utility to reindex your new repository. If you are not running the Laserfiche Migration Wizard from the computer hosting your Laserfiche Server 11, make sure that the computer you are using can access the Laserfiche Server 11 for the repository registration step.
