IFilter

An IFilter is a Windows tool that Laserfiche can use to retrieve text and properties associated with an electronic file. By default, Windows provides several IFilters that allow you to retrieve text from HTML documents, XML documents, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) files, and Microsoft Office files. In addition to the filters provided by Windows, IFilters for other types of files exist. (IFilters are typically created by the software manufacturer of the application that created the desired file type.) To take advantage of one of these IFilters, download and install it. After an IFilter has been installed on your computer, it will be immediately available for use by Laserfiche. Text pages can be created for that type of file; learn more.

Note: An IFilter is not always used when retrieving text from Microsoft Office files. For more information, see Microsoft Office and WordPerfect Documents.

The primary purpose of an IFilter is to retrieve text associated with an electronic file. As a result, it will not store text according to the original pagination in the electronic file, but as a single page. The maximum number of characters per text page is 29,000; by default, a new text page will be created every 29,000 characters from the text retrieved from the electronic file. An alternative to creating a new text page every 29,000 characters is to limit the number of lines that each text page can contain.

Note: Remember that the rule that determines when a new text page will be created from text generated by an IFilter is the same rule that determines when new text pages will be created when text files are imported into Laserfiche.
